With many things you get what you pay for, and that often includes gardening tools and accessories. Heavy duty use requires a heavy duty garden hose.
Well , if you want it to last it does. That ultra cheap hose from Walmart or Target may be fine for a season or two of light use, but if it's going to be dragged around through branches, roots, rocks, or even just used a fair bit and you want it to last, you'll need something more sturdy (of course these establishments also sell better hoses, but they probably sell a lot more cheapies!).
Let's face it, most of us do not have the time nor desire to baby our hoses. But in the past heavy duty meant "heavy" and these hoses were a chore to lug around and basically deal with. Fortunately that is no longer the case as there are lighter weight ones available that are quite durable. Modern materials make all the difference.
A cheap hose will be all vinyl constriction. A better quality on will have PVC or rubber as well in the mix, and a heavy duty hose will have multiple plies or layers of reinforced material. You will commonly find 4 ply to 8 ply hoses, and the number of plies can be deceiving as a cheap 8-ply is not as good as a quality 4 ply. Read reviews and/or get recommendations.
Also pay attention to the ends on hoses! I prefer brass connectors although there are high quality non-brass ones as well. Again, get others input as mentioned above. The hoses below have great connectors!
Here are a few hoses either I've used personally or that have great reviews and user satisfaction.
Gilmour makes great hoses - we sell a lot of them. The Gilmour Platinum Series Flexogen Hose
is a heavy duty 8 ply hose made in the USA.
They claim it's "The last hose you'll ever buy!" and for some of you that may just be true! It handles extremes of temperature well, has over 500 PSI burst strength and has double tire cord reinforcement. It's lightweight and easy to handle regardless of temperature. Some hoses get very stiff when it is cold but not this one. It has machined couplings (metal connectors), a metal spring protective collar, and it is easy to drag around with its smooth surface which is designed to resist abrasions as well as stains and mildew.
It comes in 25, 50, and 100 foot lengths - Click Here

User comments include "It's light, strong, doesn't kink.
What else could anyone want?" and "The
Finest Hose We have Ever Owned."
The standard Glimour Flexogen Garden Hoses are also great and
pretty heavy duty as well. They are marginally cheaper and also highly
recommended.
The Apex NeverKink Professional Duty Landscaper Hoses
are another well reviewed and received choice.
I love the industrial strength connectors, brass, on these as they can be easily tightened with a wrench if need be. This hose is constructed with "reflex mesh" for strength with a vinyl coating that protects against mold and mildew, and it stays very flexible down to 35 degrees.
It also has a "Power Coil collar" - basically a protective spring - at the faucet end to eliminates the possibility of kinking at the faucet .

Comments include "The best hose we ever bought!" by Rick in New York City/New Jersey.
There are certainly other Heavy Duty Garden hoses out there, but these are great choices with excellent reviews. They should last many years, and not need to be babied. I'd rather spend a bit more and not have to replace my hoses regularly. It can save money on the long run too!
