Garden Hose Storage

Garden and lawns are beautiful, but if you're like me, you don't consider garden hoses to be beautiful. Although I have a few semi-permanently installed and covered by mulch, in general I want my hoses out of the way when I'm not using them and often out of sight.

A wall or post mounted hose holder is one option. We have a pretty decorative one mounted in front of the house and a larger basic plastic one mounted in the back of the house where it's not visible. I may mount another one in the garage for winter storage as well.

A garden hose reel is also very convenient. Most are free standing although there are also a few wall mount models and some designed to be carried around. When you are not using your hose, you simply wind it quickly and easily up on the reel by turning the handle. Fancy ones may have a guide to wind the hose evenly, and there are even electric ones that automatically wind the hose at the push of a button.

Some models leave the hose visible while others are enclosed and look like a small box. Some garden hose reels also have wheels to make occasionally moving them convenient. Models designed for more than occasionally being moved are usually called hose reel carts or wagons, and often have four inflatable tires. They make moving your hose over long distances and over rough terrain easy.

A garden hose pot is another option, and ideal where you have no wall to mount a hose holder or don't like the aesthetics of a hose reel. A garden hose storage pot is quite literally a pot you store your hose in, and there are plenty of options ranging from cheap and utilitarian to more expensive and beautiful. They are made of various materials including wicker, terra cotta, and copper. My friend Ruthie has a beautiful hand made copper garden hose pot than perfectly complements her equally beautiful garden. It looks more like a piece of art than a storage device, but of course is both!

One thing you should not do is hang a hose from a hook or nail. Hoses should be rolled around some type of cylinder to prevent damage, or coiled and stored flat.
