Garden Hose Pump

Hoses are extremely useful devices, and the invention of the hose probably ranks up there with the invention of the wheel! I am really serious. What's more important, moving around or having drinking water? A garden hose pump makes a garden hose even more useful (or more generically, a pump can make a hose rock).

The most common way most of us use a hose is to connect it to some sort of a source that supplies whatever it is we are “hosing” at pressure, so it gets delivered to the business end. Three quick examples from my day today include pumping gas into my car, filling my bike tires with air, and watering my garden, potted tomato plants, and lawn.

Most of the time we connect a garden hose to a faucet, and the water, whether municipality supplied or from a well like mine, is delivered to end, usually watering plants so they grow well. But there are of course other uses to hoses and garden hoses in particular.

You can use a hose as a siphon. For example, hose can also be used to siphon gas, for example as I did from my car this spring so I could fill my mower and mow the lawn. Not necessarily recommended, because although the “non gasoline approved” garden hose survived, I got a month full of gas - yuckkk! Another example is when my friend Dave-Pete’s above ground pool was a mess and the drain was horribly clogged (he left in late summer/early fall for a month), we were able to use a garden hose as a siphon and we drained the pool, albeit slowly.

A siphon only works when you a transferring a liquid to a lower level. Sometimes you want to pump a liquid higher. Like a couple falls ago when my basement was flooding. A garden hose pump can be used to pump out basements and many other things like pools, tanks, boats, and much more. It can even be used to wash cars, trucks, sidewalks, driveways, and much more too!

You can also use a garden hose pump to water your garden and lawn from a natural water source, for example if you have a nearby pond or stream.

One excellent and well reviewed choice is the Wayne PC4 1/2 HP Water Pump.

It plugs into your wall outlet, connects to you standard 3./4" garden hose, and is made of durable cast iron, not plastic. It has a powerful 1/2 horsepower transfer water pump that can increase line pressure by up to 40 pounds.

It also has a suction strainer to keep out junk and the ballbearings have lifetime lubrication. Wayne pumps come with a one-year limited warranty. It's  a good choice.

User comments include, "Great little pump!!!" by C. R. Bock on Ohio and "Works like a champ" by Trian in New York. Click Here to read the reviews.

Water pressure is reportedly better than or equal to a standard faucet. Some users report that it needs occasional maintenance and is not suitable for constant use, but for occasional use it's a winner for most.

There are of course other garden hose and other similar pumps available, some general purpose like the Wayne above, some for special purposes like pools or marine use. Click Here to see more choices at Amazon.
